EU and EBRD support Moldovan fruit grower on its path to European markets

Moldovan company PDG Fruct may have begun as a modest family fruit-growing business, but today it operates according to international standards and exports to European Union markets. What started as a small local initiative driven by a family’s ambition to build a fruit production business from the ground up is now evolving into a modern enterprise focused on expansion, innovation and long-term sustainability.

PDG Fruct is among more than 440 Moldovan businesses supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union through the EU4Business initiative. Through this joint programme, small and medium-sized enterprises receive access to financing, EU grants and technical assistance, helping them invest in modern technologies, improve efficiency and strengthen their competitiveness in both local and European markets.

Bearing fruit

Zinaida Plămădeală, PDG Fruct’s administrator and export manager, still remembers the emotions of seeing the company’s fruit on the shelves of local retailers for the first time.

“We were full of emotion, enthusiasm and hope, even though our harvest was modest,” she recalls.

The company began with strawberries and apples before later expanding into plum production. Today, these fruits are grown near Moldova’s capital, in the villages of Păulești and Pitușca.

“For me, the most rewarding moment is seeing our fruit delivered fresh and appreciated in international markets,” says Zinaida. “It means we are bringing value to consumers and pride to our team.”

Life at the company follows the rhythm of the land. Early summer begins with strawberries and apples, followed by plums that last into late autumn. After the harvest comes processing, packaging, distribution and exports.

Today, PDG Fruct supplies fruit to several EU countries, supported by a team of 30 dedicated young professionals, most of them from local communities.

Investing in modern standards with EU support

Ambition and determination alone are not enough to succeed in modern agriculture. Competing in international markets requires advanced technologies, efficiency and compliance with European quality standards.

To achieve this, PDG Fruct turned to the EU4Business-EBRD Credit Line, a joint initiative of the European Union and the EBRD designed to help companies invest in greener, more efficient and higher-quality production processes.

The programme combines EBRD financing provided through local partner banks with EU investment incentives and technical support, enabling companies to modernise their operations and move closer to EU market requirements.

“We invested in automated sorting and packaging equipment not only to increase productivity, but also to improve sustainability,” explains Zinaida. “Our goal was to reduce losses, ensure consistent quality, increase efficiency and eventually become a regional hub for other fruit producers.”

The investment delivered immediate results.

Productivity has doubled, and the company can now sort and pack around 36 tonnes of plums in just eight hours. Most importantly, the improved quality control allows PDG Fruct to meet the strict standards required by international buyers.

Looking ahead

The company is already planning its next stage of growth.

PDG Fruct aims to expand its plum orchards, build a new storage and packaging facility and further digitalise its operations in order to strengthen its position in European supply chains.

“We believe in smart agriculture – connected to EU markets and built on sustainability and innovation,” says Zinaida. “Our ambition is to contribute to Moldova’s agricultural sector, increase exports, adopt modern technologies and become one of the leading producers of plums and other fruits.”

Behind these ambitions lies a deeply personal commitment: combining Moldova’s rich agricultural traditions with modern European technologies to produce fruit that consumers across Europe can enjoy.

And despite the company’s international success, some things remain unchanged.

As Zinaida smiles and admits:

“I still love ripe plums straight from the orchard the most.”
